Kashmir looks completely different from one season to the next, and for travellers from Kerala that change is a big part of the magic. Here’s a simple guide to picking your season.
Spring (March–May): blossoms and tulips
The valley wakes up in spring. Orchards bloom, the Mughal gardens fill with colour, and Srinagar’s famous tulip season usually peaks around late March to April. Days are pleasant and nights are cool, so it’s ideal for families and first-time visitors who want comfortable sightseeing.
Good for: Mughal gardens, a shikara ride on Dal Lake, easy walks in Pahalgam.
Summer (June–August): green meadows everywhere
Summer is Kashmir at its greenest. Pahalgam’s valleys, Sonamarg’s meadows and the road towards Thajiwas Glacier are open and full of life. It’s a great escape from the Kerala monsoon, and the most popular time, so plan early.
Good for: Pony rides to Chandanwari, glacier views at Sonamarg, long days outdoors.
Autumn (September–November): golden chinars
As the chinar trees turn gold and red, Kashmir becomes a photographer’s dream. The crowds thin out, the air is crisp, and early snow may dust the higher peaks by November.
Good for: Couples, photography, quieter sightseeing.
Winter (December–February): the snow season
If you’ve never seen snow, this is the time. Gulmarg turns into a white wonderland, with skiing, sledding and the Gondola ride over snowy slopes. Pack proper winter wear, as temperatures drop well below freezing.
Good for: Snow activities, skiing, that first-snowfall moment.
Planning from Kerala
- Pack for the season: thermals and a good jacket for winter; light layers for summer.
- Leave buffer time: mountain roads can close for weather, so keep a flexible day if you can.
- Let us handle the logistics: our Kashmir Valley Escape covers pick-up, stays, transport and a shikara ride. Just tell us your dates.
